Mentoplasty or chin surgery is a procedure in which the facial profile is improved according to each face; since in some cases there’s a chin deficit and in other cases an excess, for that reason Dr. Juan Pablo Rodríguez performs a strict study of the face to determine what is best for you.

Usually, a reference point to know if it is necessary to perform a mentoplasty is to evaluate the patients profile in a photo, if the chin is aligned in contrast to the lower lip or if on the contrary, it is behind or in front of it. In these last two alterations, the patient is a candidate for a mentoplasty. It is also important to take into account the perception of the chin, if it is considered small or poorly projected, the patient should consult an specialist to evaluate the need for the procedure.

Mentoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that does not leave any external scar, in which using the chin bone itself or using implants predesigned for this purpose, the width and length of the mandible are perfected according to each facial profile.

A chin augmentation can be performed with a small incision in the intraoral region and by placing a predesigned chin for the patient’s face, in some cases it is possible to improve the projection of it with the same bone of the patient through a chin advance. The objective is to give a facial profile according to the face. In both men and women the appearance improves significantly.

When a chin augmentation through implant is performed, it is a short procedure of about 1 hour of surgical intervention and with a fast recovery.

Chin surgery is performed by an intraoral approach so there would be no external scars. The stitching removal is not necessary since those placed inside the mouth and are reabsorbed spontaneously.

What can be expected from a Mentoplasty?

In women the face becomes thinner, stylized and in line with other facial structures such as nose and cheekbones. In men we seek for a more masculine look.

How much and how is the postoperative?

The post operative is very fast and simple because the approach is inside the mouth. The discomfort is minimal and only an adequate intraoral hygiene is needed.

Postoperative Care of Chin Surgery or Mentoplasty

1. Permanently use sunscreen, avoid being hit or in the chin region.
2. You should not try lifting heavy objects, children or pets.
3. Do not smoke during this period (3 months), the cigarette does not help the cicatrization.
4. The healing process is important, so I you must be protected from the sun for at least 6 weeks.
5. You should go rigorously to the scheduled control appointments.
